France Condemns Iran’s Crackdown on Protests

France’s ambassador to the United Nations has expressed strong disapproval of Iran’s harsh response to widespread protests. This comes alongside discussions within the French government about potentially providing satellite communication support to the Iranian people, who are facing severe internet restrictions.

In a recent conversation, Ambassador Jérôme Bonafont highlighted an alarming increase in repression by Iranian officials, mentioning France’s commitment to imposing sanctions and applying diplomatic pressure. “We condemn Iran’s repression of the popular movement at the highest levels,” he stated. “Honestly, the violence seems to be escalating.”

Following a total internet shutdown that Iranian authorities instituted during the unrest, France’s foreign minister has indicated that they are looking into options for transferring satellite technology operated by Eutelsat to assist Iran.

In light of this situation, foreign ministers from France, the U.S., and other G7 nations have conveyed that further restrictions may be implemented if Iran continues ignoring international human rights guidelines. These countries are united in their response.

Earlier, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar spoke with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrault, pushing for the designation of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization at the EU level. Though Bonafont didn’t commit explicitly to this idea, he pointed out that sanctions have already been placed on various individuals linked to Iran’s regime.

“We need to stand firmly with the Iranian people and challenge the regime’s oppressive actions,” he remarked. Italy’s situation is also getting attention, as it illustrates how nations have to address security threats collectively.

Bonafont suggested that European unity has notably improved since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, emphasizing the extensive support being provided to Ukraine by European nations.

As for the United Nations, Bonafont has called for reform in response to recent budget cuts while reaffirming the importance of the UN in addressing global challenges. Even amidst these financial limitations, he stressed that reform is necessary but doesn’t diminish the UN’s critical role in world affairs.

In discussing recent U.S. funding cuts to various UN bodies, including UNRWA, Bonafont articulated that the effectiveness of international organizations is often enhanced when they are more universally supported, although participation remains a sovereign choice for nations like the U.S.
