Influencer Sentenced for Prank with Fake Syringe

A French influencer has been sentenced to six months in prison for staging a prank involving a fake syringe that unsettled members of the public. The individual, identified as Ilan M. and known online as “Amine Mojito,” was detained after a video of the prank went viral on TikTok, just ahead of the Fête de La Musique (World Music Day) in June.

The clip, titled “Mojito le Pikare Fuu” (Mad Stinger), showcased a disturbing scenario where the 27-year-old pretended to inject an empty syringe into unsuspecting individuals.

The prank ignited panic across France, as concerns grew about real needle attacks occurring at student gatherings and festivals. Authorities reported receiving numerous alerts about this issue, especially during the music festivities, although actual incidents were scarce.

Prosecutors contended that Mojito had deliberately encouraged this alarming trend through his actions or reckless behavior.

Last month, he was originally sentenced to 15 months in prison under electronic surveillance, which included a five-month suspension. However, the Paris Crown Court recently decided on a final sentence of 12 months, with half of that time categorized as “violence with weapons that are unfit for use,” according to reports.

Mojito was also ordered to pay a fine of about $1,760 (AU $2,660) and faces a three-year ban on possessing or transporting any weapons.

In court, he expressed a lack of understanding regarding the implications of his actions. “I had no idea,” he stated, adding that he thought the prank was harmless and merely a reflection of what he had seen online from other countries. “I didn’t consider how this would affect others,” he admitted.

His attorney commented that the verdict has reignited discussions about the balance between public safety and individual rights, especially in light of the initial media frenzy surrounding the case.

Despite these points, many social media users in France expressed their outrage at the leniency of the sentence. Some argued that six months in prison isn’t sufficient given the potential harm caused by his actions.

The underlying concern remains that, even with an empty syringe, such pranks might inspire copycat behavior with real threats, putting others at risk. “Even if it was just a prank, it likely instilled real fear in those who were tricked,” one user remarked.
