French Media Links Charlie Kirk Memorial to Nazi Rally

Emotional Gathering in Arizona Draws Criticism from French Media

A large crowd of over 60,000 gathered at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, to commemorate the life of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA. This event took place just 11 days after his tragic assassination during a student debate at Utah Valley University. Speeches were given by prominent figures, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Vice President J.D. Vance, and President Donald Trump.

The gathering emphasized Christian values, with Kirk’s widow, Erica Kirk, recalling her husband’s commitment to his beliefs. It seemed to be a moment of unity for many, but not everyone felt the same way.

The French media were quick to criticize the memorial. Thomas Snegarov, a contributor to C Politique and French public broadcaster France 5, commented that the imagery at the event reminded him of Nazi rallies from the 1930s. He expressed a strong opinion, linking American white hegemony to Hitler’s racial ideologies, and suggested the parallels were undeniable, which drew a lot of reactions.

Former French Minister of Culture, Aurélie Filippetti, shared her disgust with the proceedings, stating that such events only serve to glorify figures who have supposedly died heroically. Her words echoed a broader discomfort with the memorial’s tone.

On the airwaves, Charles Adams, a former U.S. ambassador to Finland, drew historical comparisons, likening Kirk’s assassination to the 1933 Reichstag fire. When asked if he foresaw an “authoritarian backlash” from Trump in response to the murder, he affirmed it, claiming it echoed the implications of that past event.

The backlash against Kirk’s legacy wasn’t confined to France, with some German broadcasters labeling him as “racist” and distorting his views. This criticism, too, ignited discussions about the accuracy of reporting and the repercussions of spreading misinformation about public figures.
