Michel Barnier vows to address feelings of 'anger' and 'injustice' as France's new prime minister

Michel BarnierFrance's new right-wing prime minister vowed to address people's feelings of anger, abandonment and injustice, promising a “new era” and a break with the past.
Barnier, the EU's former Brexit negotiator, was put into office after being appointed by President Emmanuel Macron to form a “unitary government in the service of the nation”, an attempt to end two months of political paralysis following a surprise general election.
At 73, Barnier is the oldest prime minister in modern French history and said his first task would be to “respond as best we can to the challenges, the anger, the sense of abandonment and injustice that is so prevalent in cities, regions and the countryside”.
The government's priorities would be education, along with security and immigration control, he said.
The left is disappointed with Barnier's appointment and is now trying to oust him with a vote of no confidence.
Controversially, Macron appears to be hoping that by voting against the no-confidence motion, Le Pen's National Rally will keep Barnier in power. RN suggested on Thursday that it would not automatically reject Barnier but would wait to see what policies he sets out in his first address to parliament.
