Florida police say naked A man was stabbed The attack occurred when a French tourist tried to break into a rental car on the resort island.
The Sanibel Police Department said officers were called Wednesday night to a report of a man breaking into a vacation rental unit on Buttonwood Lane.
“I know it’s a bad mental environment.”
When they arrived on the scene, they found a naked man with stab wounds who was taken away in an ambulance and did not appear to be a tourist, according to local residents.
Police said they transported the man to hospital and then had to respond to a structure fire in a tiki cottage at the residence.
The property manager at Seahorse Cottage heard the incident and arrived on scene, he told WFTX-TV.
“She pulled up and saw this guy, naked,” property co-manager Matthew Jankauskas said. “He was just sitting there. He was getting cleaned up, he had wounds on his body. He was bleeding and you could tell it was a bad psychological environment. When I saw that, I was like, wow, my God. You don’t see that very often. You don’t see that every day on Sanibel.”

Sanibel police said they believe this is an isolated incident, but the investigation is ongoing.

neighbor He told WBBH-TV Police said they know the suspect, identified as Robert Latta Butterfield III, but don’t know why he “lost control.” Police told WBBH the suspect has a lengthy criminal history in Florida as well as Mississippi.
Sanibel is a city and island on Florida’s east coast with a population of approximately 6,400.
