Frontrunner in Romania’s annulled presidential election barred from race

Romania's central election authorities have banned populist candidate and frontrunner Karin Georgek from running the May presidential election rerun.

“Europe is a dictatorship, and Romania is under tyranny!” Georgescu said in a post in X following the decision. “I have one message left for me! If Romanian democracy falls, the entire democratic world will fall!”

Trump's administration has been interested in Romanian presidential elections since it was cancelled in May due to allegations of Russian conspiracy in Georgek's favor.

SpaceX CEO and Doge leader Elon Musk sounded and shared his response to the decision.

“This is crazy,” Musk wrote to X.

Lake Kali, a senior adviser to the Trump administration for the US Global Media Agency, also responded and compared what was happening in Romania by “they tried with Trump here in the US.”

“Do you love your country and do you want to put it first?” Lake posted on X. “Then globalists want you to leave the vote and be silent. They tried it with Trump here in the US. They did it to Borsanaro, Brazil. Now they're making it Georgek, Rome.

Georjuk, who won the first round of Romania's cancelled presidential election last year, was detained in February for questioning by the country's top prosecutors.

The Romanian Constitutional Court made an unprecedented move to negate the election two days before the December 8 outflow after Georgek's first round victory. According to the Associated Press, he voted in single digits and declared zero campaign spending. Allegations of Russian interference and election violations appeared soon. After the election was cancelled, prosecutors began an investigation into alleged campaign funding fraud and suspected anti-Semitism and hate speech.

The Trump administration criticized Romania for cancelling last year's presidential election. Vice President JD Vance The court's ruling claims it is based on “flaky suspicions” and “huge pressure” from its Romanian neighbors.

“Romania has directly cancelled the results of the presidential election based on flimsy suspicions from the intelligence reporting agency and the heavy pressure from its continental neighbors,” Vance said in December.

He also warned European leaders by failing to “become a “democratic duty” by “censoring or putting your enemy in prison,” and by “ignoring basic voters about questions like those who will become part of our shared society.”

“For many of us on the other side of the Atlantic, it appears to be an old, entrenched interest hidden behind ugly Soviet-era words like misinformation and disinformation. They simply say they don't like the idea that God might vote differently, or vote differently, or worse yet, vote differently.

Georgescu, a solid critic of NATO and Ukraine's Western support, has sparked controversy in the past for describing Romanian fascist and nationalist leaders in the 1930s and 1940s as national heroes, according to the Associated Press.

He also praised Russian President Vladimir Putin in the past as “a person who loves his country” and called Ukraine the “invented nation.”
