FTC Investigates Media Matters
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has initiated an investigation into Media Matters, a journalism organization known for its left-leaning perspective.
On Wednesday, the FTC officially launched this inquiry, focusing on the organization’s role in researching hate and anti-Semitism on the platform X. Sources familiar with the situation indicated that the agency sent a letter to Media Matters regarding allegations of improper collaboration with advertisers.
Additionally, the FTC is seeking information on various communications media issues. Documentation suggests the agency is looking into other entities potentially involved in investigating “misinformation” and “hate speech” online, mentioning a global alliance dedicated to responsible media.
The FTC has also requested documents related to ongoing lawsuits against X, which is suing WFA. Notably, FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson, appointed by former President Donald Trump, had previously engaged in a separate investigation concerning the online platform.
Ferguson asserted the need to oppose advertiser boycotts that could undermine fair competition between online platforms.
Elon Musk has criticized Media Matters for its alleged role in promoting advertiser boycotts, according to reports. Musk’s X filed a lawsuit in 2023 against the organization, claiming that it had misrepresented advertisements from major companies by associating them with posts from hate groups.
This legal action followed the release of several reports encouraging major advertisers like Disney, Apple, and IBM to support Media Matters’ initiatives.
The FTC has been contacted for comments on the ongoing investigation but has only confirmed its existence without offering further details.
