Fugitive brought back from Ukraine after bank heists in New Jersey

Authorities have confirmed that an international fugitive, Edward Devaw, wanted for a series of bank robberies, has been returned to the U.S. after nearly three years in Ukraine. The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office announced his arrival back in the states on Friday.

Devaw, 30, was apprehended in Lviv by the Ukrainian National Guard on February 25. Nearly three months later, he was handed over to U.S. and Polish authorities at the Polish border.

Camden County Prosecutor Grace Macaulay commented on his arrest, noting, “This showcases what law enforcement can accomplish when they collaborate across various levels.” She expressed gratitude for the contributions of both U.S. authorities and international partners.

Devaw is linked to three bank heists in southern New Jersey that occurred between September 22 and September 28, 2022. He allegedly robbed Truist Bank in Waterford, TD Bank in Willingboro, and Republic Bank in Winslow.

He was charged with two counts of second-degree robbery just a couple of days after the incidents, specifically for the robberies at the banks in Waterford and Winslow, with a third charge added for the Willingboro robbery soon after.

Investigators discovered that following the last robbery, Devaw fled to several European countries before ultimately settling in Ukraine. They tracked him down to Lviv, leading to his arrest.

Former U.S. official Juan Matos Jr. remarked on the matter, emphasizing that the long reach of justice is a constant, regardless of where fugitives try to escape. “This arrest is a testament to the relentless teamwork of local, state, and international law enforcement,” he stated. “We remain committed to holding those who engage in violent crime accountable, no matter where they flee.”

A court hearing for Devaw was expected to take place at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, where he would remain in custody.
