Derrick Groves Captured in Atlanta After Months on the Run
Derrick Groves, the last fugitive from a group of New Orleans prisoners who broke out earlier this year, has been apprehended following a standoff in Atlanta, according to authorities.
Louisiana State Police reported that Groves was arrested after a brief standoff on October 8, 2025. The arrest resulted from a coordinated effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies, including Crimestoppers Greater New Orleans, the U.S. Marshals, and the FBI.
At the time of his escape on May 16, Groves was serving a life sentence for second-degree murder, stemming from a shooting incident during a Mardi Gras celebration in 2024 that left two people dead. He had been a fugitive for nearly five months and was one of ten inmates who escaped from the Orleans Parish Justice Center.
The conditions at the Orleans Justice Center were concerning, with staffing levels at only 60%. This saw four supervisors overseeing around 1,400 inmates, creating an environment ripe for the escape.
In the aftermath, some of the escapees were captured within weeks, but it took longer to track down Groves, who had a notable criminal history, including four murder convictions. Additionally, some family members and prison staff were arrested for allegedly assisting in the escape.
Dariana Burton, identified as Groves’ girlfriend and a former employee of the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, was arrested in June. Authorities suspect she played a role in facilitating communication between Groves and individuals outside the prison, providing crucial support for his escape.
The situation continues to unfold, with a focus on the systemic issues within the justice system that contributed to the escape and the subsequent manhunt. Ultimately, Groves’ capture highlights ongoing challenges in managing inmate populations and ensuring safety both within correctional facilities and the wider community.
