Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said Saturday that election interference charges against Donald Trump have not been delayed by proceedings over his romantic relationship with the special prosecutor hired for the case.
“I don’t feel like we’re slowing down at all,” Willis said in an interview with CNN.
“I think efforts are being made to slow down the train, but it’s getting closer.”
Her latest comments come as defense attorneys continue to argue about her handling of the massive indictment against the former president and current Republican nominee.
President Trump has been charged with four felonies, including in separate federal and state lawsuits over efforts to overturn the 2020 election he lost to President Joe Biden, but political opponents have unfairly targeted him. He is fighting to have the lawsuit delayed and dismissed.
Willis spoke days after a Georgia judge granted an appeal from a ruling by lawyers for Trump’s co-defendants that allowed the case to proceed even after Special Counsel Nathan Wade dropped it.
This could allow defense attorneys to amplify allegations of cheating between Wade and Willis.
The defense has argued that Willis hired Wade to benefit from prosecuting Trump through a romantic relationship.
Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee said there wasn’t enough evidence to prove those claims, but chided Willis for what he called a “serious error in judgment.”
Willis told CNN that he doesn’t think he needs to restore his reputation and has done nothing to be ashamed of.
“I’m not ashamed of anything I did,” Willis said.
“I think my biggest sin was having an affair with a man, but I’m not ashamed of that.”
Georgia State University law professor Anthony Michael Kreis, who has been tracking the case, criticized her comments in a post about X.
“If I were Fani Willis, out of an abundance of caution, I would not speak to the media at all at this time,” Kreis said.
