Funding from Soros supports Virginia vote that may alter House map

Liberal funding is being funneled into efforts aimed at persuading Virginia voters to support a referendum set for April 21. This initiative could allow Virginia Democrats to revise the state’s congressional maps, with nearly $33 million coming from just eight progressive groups over the past few months, including the Policy Reform Fund, which is backed by George Soros.

The Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP) monitors state spending, revealing that Virginians for Fair Elections received $5 million sourced from an organization connected to Soros. This organization is part of his Open Society Foundations, known for its support of liberal ideals.

Soros’ network has also gained significant influence in the district attorney realm, backing various far-left prosecutors, including those in high-profile cities like San Francisco, Chicago, and Los Angeles. It’s noted that, as of 2022, one in five Americans would have a prosecutor associated with Soros.

In Virginia, Soros’ Democratic Political Action Committee has contributed at least $500,000 toward Abigail Spanberger’s run for governor, as well as supporting Attorney General Jay Jones, who has made controversial remarks about his Republican opponent.

The gerrymandering plans in Virginia could potentially shift the congressional delegation from a split of six Democrats and five Republicans to a more Democratic-leaning arrangement of ten districts. The campaign for Virginians for Fair Elections aims to rally support for the upcoming vote that would enable this redistricting, following a similar effort by Texas Republicans that changed electoral maps there.

Tens of millions are being funneled into Virginia ahead of the referendum, predominantly favoring the Democratic side. Beyond Soros’ backing, funds are also flowing in from various sources, including $20 million from the House Majority PAC, $100,000 from Senator Tim Kaine’s leadership PAC, and over $10 million from the Fairness Project, alongside contributions from smaller liberal supporters and the Virginia Democratic Party.

In contrast, the group opposing the redistricting, Virginians for Fair Maps, has raised just over $3 million from only two donors—$560,000 from the Republican Party of Virginia and $2.5 million from their own namesake group, which reflects a stark difference in fundraising.

Even though there’s considerable backing for the referendum, predictions suggest it might be a close call. Early voting has indicated higher turnout in Republican strongholds compared to the state’s last November election which, notably, favored Democrats.

Democratic lawmakers in Virginia are urging Spanberger to take a more hands-on approach in redistricting efforts. Additionally, Beth Macy, a Democratic congressional candidate, expressed sentiments that Virginia Democrats should play a more active role in this contentious scenario.

Fox News Digital reached out to Soros’ Open Society Foundations and other significant contributors but did not receive any comments prior to publication. Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the Fairness Project reiterated that the amendment is designed to empower Virginia voters, emphasizing that this isn’t about benefiting one party over another, but “restoring fairness” across the state.
