Fundraiser for deceased Nassau officer killed by drunk driver approaches $170K in less than a day

A fundraising effort for the family of fallen Nassau County police officer Patricia Espinosa has raised approximately $170,000 in less than 24 hours.

The GoFundMe, set up by the Nassau County Police Hispanic Association after the police officer was tragically killed by a suspected drunk driver, raised over $125,000 within the first three hours.

“Officer Patricia Espinosa was living the American dream,” the GoFundMe page stated. It highlighted her journey after immigrating from Ecuador at 21, where she already held a university degree, learned English, and pursued a better life.

Espinosa, aged 42, lost her life when a drunk driver allegedly ran a red light and crashed his Chevrolet Silverado into her Alfa Romeo on Route 347 in St. James, according to police reports.

She was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where she later died.

The driver, Matthew Smith, 20, along with his passenger, John Andari, 25, were hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening. Smith has been charged with driving under the influence, though further charges are pending as he recovers.

Espinosa joined the Nassau Police Department in 2017 and quickly gained the affection of the 5th Precinct and the North Elmont community. She was remembered for her warmth, intensity, and hands-on approach to policing.

Previously, she was a New York state corrections officer and served as a field training officer, focusing on mentoring younger officers and getting local youth interested in public service.

She leaves behind her husband and two-year-old daughter, Mia.

According to the Nassau police union, Espinosa was deeply committed to philanthropy, earning awards for her community contributions throughout her career.

Nassau County PBA President Tommy Shevlin expressed sorrow on social media, stating, “Patricia understood the sacrifices of this profession… The senselessness of her loss makes it even more painful. We stand united with her family and fellow officers to honor her legacy.”
