Future bride dies in tragic wrong-way drunk-driving accident that left fiancé in a coma just weeks before their wedding, according to authorities

A tragic accident in Oklahoma claimed the life of a bride just weeks before her wedding. Katelyn Callahan, 23, and her fiancé, Tristen Cherry, 24, were returning home from the Calf Fry Festival when a drunk driver, traveling the wrong way, collided with their vehicle around 2:30 AM on May 2.

Cherry, seated in the back, recalled the chilling moment just before impact. “I sat in my seat and I see the headlights. I told Katelyn, ‘I love you.’ And then we hit,” he shared, as he spent nearly a month in a coma following the crash.

Callahan, who was driving, tragically did not survive the accident.

The couple had been together for three years and were set to marry on May 31 in Bristow.

In the days after waking from his coma, Cherry faced the grim reality, suffering from numerous facial fractures and other serious injuries. “It took a while,” he said, reflecting on his recovery. “I talk to Katelyn every day. Healing takes time.” It’s clear that he’s still grappling with both the physical and emotional aftermath.

The driver responsible, 29-year-old Sergio Ibarra, has been charged with first-degree manslaughter, among other offenses. Ibarra and a passenger were also injured in the crash.

During what was supposed to be their wedding day, Cherry found himself in the hospital surrounded by family and friends, who came together to honor Callahan’s memory. He mentioned, “I saw Katelyn wearing her wedding dress in the photo,” adding, “She was gorgeous.” It seems bittersweet, with moments of joy overshadowed by profound loss.

Cherry and Callahan’s relationship was described as “the greatest love story this town has ever seen.” They had attended high school just ten minutes apart, and their bond deepened when Cherry invited her to a fraternity formal. He has since reflected on their love as something truly special, deeply rooted in shared moments that they cherished.

“Love will continue to grow as the days go by,” he expressed, believing that their connection transcends even this heartbreaking experience.
