Uncertain Future for Michigan Athletic Director
A decision regarding the future of Michigan’s athletic director, Warde Manuel, is anticipated soon.
According to reports, University of Michigan trustees are set to evaluate an investigation focused on the athletic department’s culture. As part of this review, a determination about Manuel’s role will be made.
The investigation was initiated in December after the university’s football coach, Sherone Moore, was dismissed. This followed the revelation of an “inappropriate relationship” he had with a staff member, which ultimately led to an alarming incident where he confronted her at her home.
This unsettling series of events led to Moore’s arrest, resulting in a plea deal for charges stemming from malicious telecommunications use and criminal trespass. It’s been one of several significant controversies that have arisen during Manuel’s tenure, intensifying scrutiny over the department’s culture.
The law firm Jenner & Block has been tasked with examining the athletic department. Their report is expected to shed light on what Manuel and others in the department knew about Moore’s relationship prior to the incident.
In addition to the Moore affair, Manuel has overseen more troubling situations, including a sign-stealing scandal linked to former staffer Connor Stallions, as well as federal charges against a former offensive coordinator, Matt Weiss, involving aggravated theft and unauthorized computer access.
Despite these controversies, it’s important to note that there have also been positive developments. Manuel has been at the helm since 2016, during which time the football team won a national title in January 2024, and the men’s basketball program claimed a championship this spring.
He also celebrated national titles in both men’s gymnastics (2025) and women’s gymnastics (2021) during his tenure. Manuel’s contract extends through 2030, which adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing discussions about his future.
