Tragic Shooting of New York Times Executive

Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old engineering executive for the New York Times Games, was shot and killed on Saturday afternoon in Dublin, California. Authorities reported that his parents-in-law were arrested shortly after the incident on suspicion of murder.

McKinsey was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds and unfortunately was pronounced dead at the scene. A spokesperson from the New York Times confirmed that McKinsey had been serving as the director of engineering for NYT Games since January 2023.

It was around 3:08 p.m. local time when a police sergeant, who was nearby, noticed a man lying in the parking lot and stopped to check. Simultaneously, dispatchers received various 911 calls about a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found McKinsey injured and, with the help of witnesses, were able to quickly identify and detain the two suspects who had remained at the scene.

The suspects are Shouyong Zhang, 77, and Shili Chen, 77, both from Dublin, and they are identified as McKinsey’s in-laws. They have since been booked into Santa Rita Jail on murder charges. Thankfully, authorities confirmed that there are no other suspects being sought and there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Investigators are still looking into the circumstances surrounding the shooting but have yet to disclose a possible motive. The Dublin Police Services expressed gratitude to the witnesses and community members, acknowledging that their cooperation played a crucial role in the quick apprehension of the suspects.
