Garrett Whitlock’s Tough Season with a Hidden Injury
Red Sox pitcher Garrett Whitlock endured the last month of the 2026 season while dealing with a broken leg, all without realizing the full scope of his injury.
The 30-year-old right-handed pitcher was diagnosed with a fractured right tibia only after Boston was eliminated from the postseason by the Yankees, according to reports.
Throughout September, Whitlock experienced discomfort in his leg but pushed through, contributing to the Red Sox’s playoff chase and their American League wild-card series against the Yankees.
After the postseason, further evaluations unveiled the previously undiagnosed fracture.
Despite the injury, Whitlock managed to have an impressive end to the regular season. He made eight appearances in September, not allowing any earned runs across 7 ⅓ innings, with nine strikeouts and just two walks.
During that month, he also limited opponents to only six hits, a significant factor in the Red Sox securing their place in the postseason.
Unfortunately, his performance in the playoffs was less than stellar. He surrendered three earned runs in just 1 ⅓ innings, ending the postseason with a 20.25 ERA.
The Red Sox were aware of Whitlock’s discomfort and worked with him to handle the pain, even though the fracture went unnoticed until later.
On a brighter note, reports indicate that the fracture is not expected to necessitate surgery. Whitlock will likely be in a walking boot for about four to six weeks as he heals, with hopes that he can participate in spring training next year, provided the season begins on schedule despite ongoing discussions about a potential lockout.
Whitlock concluded the regular season with an impressive career-best 1.72 ERA across 54 appearances, striking out 59 batters while walking only nine over 52 ⅓ innings.
Additionally, he achieved a career-high 26 holds, filling a crucial role as one of Boston’s primary setup pitchers ahead of closer Aroldis Chapman.
This injury adds to what has already been a challenging season for Whitlock, who previously spent time on the injured list due to a left knee issue and later elbow inflammation.
Fortunately for him, he remains under team control, with options for the 2027 and 2028 seasons still in place.
