Mets’ Struggles Highlighted by Gary Cohen
The mood around the Mets is grim, and announcer Gary Cohen isn’t shy about expressing that sentiment. He remarked during the broadcast of a 7-2 loss to the Brewers, “The Mets go out whispering.” He pointed out it’s becoming a common theme—when the team falls behind, their late-game batting really suffers.
Since their rough start, which left them at 3-14 at one point, it’s been frustrating for everyone involved, particularly after June 13th.
Cohen’s analysis seems spot-on, especially after the ninth inning where fan-favorite Soto struck out after facing just three pitches.
It wasn’t just a one-time occurrence. Just over the weekend, the Mets faced a devastating defeat against the Pirates, where they lost 30-4 overall.
The dynamic between the MLB team and its announcers can be tricky during periods of struggle. One notable incident involved Kevin Brown, an experienced broadcaster for the Orioles, who was temporarily pulled from the air after commenting on the team’s difficulties with the Rays. This led to significant backlash until he returned a few weeks later.
However, the Mets don’t appear to experience the same issues. They don’t own SNY, the network broadcasting their games, and thus, have limited influence over what gets aired. It’s pretty standard for broadcasts to critique teams, despite tensions that might arise.
Ultimately, the core issue remains the team’s poor performance. It’s something only those on the field, under manager Carlos Mendoza, can address.
