Gas Line Explosion Shuts Down I-5 in Castaic, California

Interstate 5 (I-5) near Castaic, California, was closed after a gas line explosion led to a shelter-in-place order on Saturday.

The 34-inch transmission gas line exploded around 4:20 p.m. PT near Ridge Root Road and Pinecrest Place. Fire officials in Los Angeles County later indicated that the line was under “600 psi of pressure.” As of now, the cause of the explosion remains unclear.

A SigAlert has been issued for the 5 Freeway in both directions at Lake Hughes Road. Northbound traffic is being rerouted to SR-126, while southbound traffic is directed to SR-138.

Local residents described the explosion as sounding like a jet engine and reported that their houses shook from the force. Those living in nearby Granada Hills, Porter Ranch, and Sylmar mentioned they could smell gas in the air.

“Please shelter in place,” urged a fire official. “Close all doors, windows, and vents. Turn off your HVAC system.”

Videos of the scene began circulating on social media quite rapidly.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated that authorities were keeping a close watch on the situation. While residents might notice the smell of gas near the leak, she assured them they were not in immediate danger.

Mayor Bass mentioned, “Our hazardous materials team is monitoring air quality at three major locations.” She emphasized that the city is collaborating with LA County to assess possible impacts and ensure residents’ safety.

As the situation stands, traffic on Highway 5 is heavily congested due to the road closures.

Governor Gavin Newsom has reportedly been informed about the incident and is in touch with the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.
