GasBuddy, a company that monitors fuel prices nationwide, pushed back against President Trump’s assertions on social media Friday morning about gas prices reaching record lows.
Trump claimed that gasoline is at an all-time low of $1.98 per gallon, stating this would positively impact grocery costs and economic factors like mortgage rates and employment on his Truth Social platform.
However, GasBuddy reported they haven’t found any fuel stations offering prices that low. Patrick de Haan, the company’s director of oil analysis, mentioned to News Nation that they have no data indicating any stations are under $2 per gallon and that they haven’t encountered such prices in recent weeks.
As of Friday, the lowest price available domestically was $2.63 per gallon in Mississippi. The national average hovered around $3.18, with AAA reporting no prices below $2.61.
Economists had previously warned that Trump’s tariffs might lead to higher gasoline prices before a series of “mutual” tariffs and other measures were announced by his administration in early March, which many have currently been put on hold.
The U.S. imports the most oil from Canada compared to other countries, meaning Trump’s relationship with newly appointed Prime Minister Mark Carney might influence future gas prices, especially in regions like the Midwest, Rocky Mountains, and New England that heavily rely on Canadian fuel.
In January, Trump signed an executive order aimed at increasing domestic energy production and offshore drilling by tapping into promising federal land.
