Gates Foundation to reduce workforce by 20% and examine connections to Jeffrey Epstein, according to a report.

The Gates Foundation is set to reduce its workforce by up to 500 positions, which is roughly 20% of its total staff, over the coming years. They’ve also initiated an external inquiry into their connections with the late Jeffrey Epstein, a financier who was convicted of sexual offenses. This news emerged from an email the charity sent to its employees on Tuesday, as reported by a major news outlet.

The organization has faced significant scrutiny regarding Epstein’s links to Bill Gates, its chairman. Recently released emails from the Justice Department reveal exchanges between Epstein and officials at the Gates Foundation.

In a memo that surfaced on Tuesday, CEO Mark Suzman indicated he has requested a thorough review of the foundation’s dealings with Epstein, as well as its policies on forming new philanthropic partnerships.

In the memo, Suzman acknowledged this challenging period for the foundation, emphasizing the urgent need for decisive action. He mentioned that updates on the review are anticipated by summer.

When approached for comment, the foundation did not respond to inquiries from the press.

Earlier in February, the organization clarified that it had neither financially supported Epstein nor employed him, expressing regret over any interactions that staff members may have had with him.

Additionally, documents from the Justice Department included photos of Gates with Epstein and other individuals whose identities were obscured.

Gates has stated that his involvement with Epstein focused solely on charitable efforts and acknowledged that meeting him was a mistake. He firmly denies having spent time with any victims associated with Epstein.

A spokesperson for the foundation noted that during a City Hall meeting in February, Gates accepted responsibility for his past relationship with Epstein.

Gates has held the positions of chairman and director at the foundation, which he and his ex-wife established in 2000. The foundation is recognized as one of the largest contributors to global health initiatives worldwide.
