Northumbria police announced on Saturday that 14 children, aged 11 to 14, were taken into custody on suspicion of manslaughter following the death of a teenager after a fire in Gateshead.
The fire erupted near an industrial area in Gateshead’s Bill Quay neighborhood on Friday evening, raising concerns that Leighton Kerr, a teenager thought to be in the vicinity, was missing.
A police representative stated, “Unfortunately, after a search by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, as well as Northumbria police and other partners, the body of 14-year-old Layton Kerr was found inside the building.”
“His next of kin has been informed and is currently receiving support from professional officers.”
The spokesperson also urged the public not to speculate online or within the community, noting that inquiries are still in the early stages.
DCI Louise Jenkins of Northumbria Police expressed, “Our thoughts are with the Leighton family as they navigate the loss of their loved one. Our specialists will continue to provide support in any way needed. For now, we ask that their privacy be honored.”
