Gavin Newsom accused of reversing California progress to the Jim Crow era by other Democrats

Internal Strife Within California’s Democratic Party

California is witnessing a significant rift among Democrats. The state’s governor is facing backlash from liberal peers regarding a law aimed at boosting the housing supply.

Governor Gavin Newsom has come under fire from state lawmakers after a law was pushed, which allows developers to construct low-income housing while compensating workers at non-union rates. Despite a solid Democratic majority in Congress, resistance from Unified Union lawmakers has led to increased tensions directed at the governor.

“I can’t express how deeply inappropriate and hurtful this is,” one lawmaker remarked.

On Monday, Newsom defended his actions by stating, “I have just implemented significant housing reforms in California’s recent history.” He emphasized a commitment to dismantling longstanding barriers to affordable housing and infrastructure. “Let’s get building in California,” he added.

Critics argue that the governor has also loosened environmental standards for housing, which have historically constrained development.

Advocates for workers expressed their frustration during hearings, filling the space with “mock laughter, screams, and protests” to showcase their opposition, as reported by Politico.

“Anyone who thought this wouldn’t cause a major uproar was living in a fantasy,” said Todd David, a political consultant in San Francisco.

Senator Sasha Renée Pérez shared her concerns. “It strikes me as pretty ridiculous to see this enacted so abruptly,” she said. “I can’t explain how incredibly inappropriate and hurtful this is.” She went on to describe Newsom’s approach to labor laws as “incredibly insensitive” during federal immigration enforcement targeting Latinx workers.

Scott, a union lobbyist, drew a troubling comparison, suggesting that California is “revisiting wage laws” reminiscent of Jim Crow-era policies.

Kevin Ferreira, executive director of the Construction Trade Council, warned that the bill could effectively chain workers to their jobs, likening it to binding them to “sing chain gang songs.”

Some observers are questioning how the governor’s recent actions might impact his national ambitions after seemingly disappointing his base in California.

One union leader saw parallels between the pressure on Newsom and the demands being placed on Republicans by Trump, stating, “California Democrats are crying foul over something they don’t even understand, which is being forced upon them by Donald Trump,” as quoted in the Los Angeles Times.

“And these same lawmakers are allowing this to happen to them,” she added.
