Gavin Newsom Admits: California Still Faces Blackouts

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said Thursday that despite investing in battery capacity to store electricity for use during peak demand, the state still faces the risk of heat wave power outages. Admitted.

of Los Angeles Times report:

Gov. Gavin Newsom said Thursday that California continues to rapidly build up battery storage, essential to the transition to clean energy, but acknowledged it is still not enough to avoid power outages during heat waves.

Asked by reporters whether California currently has enough battery storage so residents don’t have to worry about power outages during periods of high electricity use, Newsom laughed.

“We still have a lot of work to do to move this transition forward with the stability that is needed,” the governor said. “No, today we are not announcing that power outages are part of the past.”

Despite the fact that California lacks the power generation capacity to meet growing demand, We are promoting it.

During the 2020 power outages, Newsom said the state needed to “calm down” to the fact that renewable energy sources like solar and wind weren’t enough for the state’s needs, but pressed ahead anyway. .

The state has closed fossil fuel plants and only one nuclear power plant remains. During the last drought, there was also a shortage of hydroelectric power generation due to low water levels in dams. It is hoped that batteries will make up for the shortfall.
