California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) convened the state Legislature on Monday for a special session aimed at “stopping Trump” in the state, including passing $25 million to be used in lawsuits against the incoming administration.
As Breitbart News pointed out after the November election, Newsom announced the special session not to address pressing issues facing the state, but rather to create a so-called “resistance” against President-elect Donald Trump. ” (i.e. the opposition) for a political purpose. Mr. Trump.
In response, President Trump said on Truth Social that Newsom is “using the term 'Trump-proof' as a way to block all the great things he could do to 'Make California Great Again.'” .
Newsom boasted Monday that unlike his predecessor, Jerry Brown, his administration would go on the offensive against Trump's policies, rather than simply reacting to them. He argued that states have been successful in reversing many Trump policies at the “agency level” in the past. (He may have been referring to President Trump's decision to withhold $1 billion in funding for a high-speed rail system that California did not build, but President Joe Biden restored that funding. )
The governor also argued that no state leader had worked so closely with the Trump administration during the coronavirus pandemic, and that California had nevertheless succeeded in preserving its case against Trump. .
Although Democrats control supermajorities in both chambers of the state legislature, the state shifted to the right in 2024, with nearly 40% of Californians voting for President-elect Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris.
The fact that Newsom is one of the top Democratic candidates for the 2028 presidential election is also believed to be correcting his stance. Newsom has declined to run as a replacement for President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris in 2024.
