Governor Newsom’s Position in 2028 Democratic Primary
California Governor Gavin Newsom seems to have an edge with Hollywood’s liberal elite, and recent insights indicate he might have a favorable shot at tapping into their financial support ahead of the 2028 Democratic primary.
One prominent figure in the industry remarked, “He’s a fighter, that’s just what we need!” referring to Newsom’s strong ties to what’s described as a “Dependable Democratic Party ATM” for decades.
Interestingly, some voices wish there were more Democrats who would take a firmer stance against Trump. It seems that many, including figures like Chuck Schumer and other leaders, may be hesitant to diverge from Trump’s approach.
Newsom has been acknowledged for his more aggressive tactics against Trump, utilizing platforms like podcasts and Substack to engage in social media commentary. His recent support for a gerrymandering measure, which passed effortlessly among Californians, has garnered positive feedback from the progressive Hollywood circle.
Reflecting on this victory, Newsom stated, “Donald Trump poked the bear, and the bear roared back,” highlighting his determined response to the former president.
One executive shared a candid sentiment: “Honestly, I wasn’t really feeling it for him, even after meeting him multiple times, but I have to say, I was genuinely impressed with how Newsom threw a jab at Trump.”
In October, the two-term governor hinted at contemplating a presidential run following the 2026 midterm elections.
Even HBO’s Bill Maher, known for critiquing more left-leaning Democrats, has voiced support for Newsom.
James Kostos, who served as a U.S. ambassador during the Obama administration and is now involved with HBO, indicated that there’s considerable excitement among L.A. donors for Newsom. “Large checks are being written,” he mentioned, noting a slow start as they recovered from previous setbacks. “Now that we’re in November, momentum is definitely building.” He also referred to the “Jimmy Kimmel effect” and how it’s serving as a narrative to counter the existing regime’s actions while organizing for upcoming elections.
One major donor reiterated that “anyone who really matters” is eager to back Newsom when he officially launches his campaign.
However, some individuals highlighted the need for caution when it comes to Newsom’s potential candidacy, emphasizing that we are still early in the run-up to the 2028 elections and that some donors might be waiting for a stronger candidate to emerge.
The race looks to be shaping up to be quite competitive, with names like Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, New York Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and even Kamala Harris eyeing the possibility of entering the fray.
Additionally, the recent defeat of Harris in the 2024 election—after her tenure as a California senator—could dissuade Democratic voters from supporting another candidate from the same solidly blue state.
Keen observers note that no Republican has taken California in a presidential election since George H.W. Bush in 1988.
Inquiries have been made to Newsom’s office for any response on these developments.
