Governor Newsom on Presidential Bid and Kamala Harris
California Governor Gavin Newsom has pointed out a significant consideration that could derail his anticipated presidential campaign: Kamala Harris, his fellow Democrat. During an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, he was candid about how the former vice president’s potential candidacy might influence his own decision-making process.
While fly-fishing with Tapper in Montana, Newsom stated, “I wouldn’t run if she ran.” He elaborated, saying, “I wouldn’t do that to her… I wouldn’t waste anyone’s time,” suggesting that it would lead to what he described as “mutually assured destruction.”
In previous statements, Newsom has mentioned that he would pursue a presidential run only if all four of his children, aged between 10 and 17, agree to it.
Interestingly, he recently shared with PBS that while two of his children support the idea of him running, the other two are opposed.
Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, are currently dealing with legal scrutiny, as federal investigations are looking into their financial matters. These inquiries include a focus on Siebel Newsom’s taxes, among other aspects surrounding the governor.
The San Francisco Standard reported just last week that investigators have also sought records related to the governor’s travel, a significant part of which is financed by the nonprofit California Protocol Foundation. Despite the scrutiny, Newsom has dismissed these investigations, calling them politically motivated attacks.
This situation continues to develop and will be updated as more information becomes available.
