Gavin Newsom Faces Backlash Over Memoir Claims
Gavin Newsom is attracting criticism online after stating in his upcoming memoir that he experienced a tough childhood.
As detailed in an article previewing the February 24 release of “Youth in a Hurry,” Newsom discusses grappling with dyslexia and coming from a troubled family.
As he eyes a potential presidential run for 2028, Newsom has attempted to minimize his connections with wealthy elites.
In a profile by New York Times, he argues that many perceptions of his privileged upbringing are inaccurate.
In a statement to Vogue, he expressed, “People believe I come from money, but that’s not the case. It’s about access and privilege, not just money.”
However, online reactions differ significantly.
Many users quickly pointed out his upbringing alongside the Getty family, a prominent billionaire clan.
One unhappy voter, Valerie Walsh, remarked on Facebook about the apparent dishonesty in Newsom’s claims.
“He was the child of a judge, not living in poverty,” she commented.
Reflecting on her own childhood just south of San Francisco, she noted, “I bought Wonder Bread only when I found coupons. My dad worked blue-collar jobs, and my mom stayed home.”
Newsom’s parents, Tessa Thomas Menzies and William Alfred Newsom III, include a California appellate court judge and a longtime attorney for the Getty family, known for their significant wealth from oil.
Additionally, Newsom’s father was closely connected to billionaire Gordon Getty, with family wealth playing a role in financing Newsom’s early business pursuits, including backing for the PlumpJack Group.
Another commenter labeled Newsom “tone-deaf,” saying, “His idea of a tough upbringing seems to be not having a new show every week!”
In a community Facebook thread, over 600 users chimed in, emphasizing his elite connections.
“He was part of one of California’s four most powerful families. He didn’t go hungry unless he chose to,” one wrote.
Newsom also has links to the political legacy of Willie Brown, who once endorsed him for college admissions.
Back in 1991, he was featured in a San Francisco Chronicle article detailing his life among the city’s affluent youth, well before stepping into the political arena.
Critics also pointed out his dining experiences, with remarks about him enjoying meals at high-end restaurants, especially recalling the backlash he faced over dining at the French Laundry during the 2020 lockdowns.
Newsom’s rise in politics has been bolstered by substantial financial support from wealthy families in San Francisco, which helped him establish a foothold as a newcomer.
Despite his wealthy background filled with elite education and connections, some argue that his early experiences instilled in him a strong work ethic. However, others believe he is merely positioning himself to appeal to voters in more rural, battleground areas.
