Gavin Newsom Sues Trump over Tariffs

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (d) announced Wednesday that the state is suing President Donald Trump over recent tariffs.

“President Trump’s illegal tariffs are causing disruption to California families, businesses and our economy. It’s a threatening job, raising prices. We’re standing up for American families who can’t afford to continue the disruption,” Newsmom said in a written statement.

The case cites the “doctrine of major issues” of the U.S. Supreme Court. This is a legal principle that assumes that Congress must consider major issues of political or economic importance. The Supreme Court relied on doctrine to break laws related to pollution prevention and student loan forgiveness under Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama, the governor’s office noted.

Newsom and the California Legislature have set aside $50 million for legal action against the administration despite seeking $40 billion in assistance to recover from recent wildfires.

The state also borrows billions of dollars each month to pay for Medi-Cal, a Medicaid program, after newspapers expanded eligibility last year to include illegal aliens.

Newsom and Bonta hope that the former president used the emergency to impose sanctions on foreign enemies, but will challenge Trump’s authority. There’s no president Before Trump did so to impose tariffs on trade.

It is unclear what the net economic impact of Trump’s tariffs will be, and Americans appear to be divided into issues, some praise Trump’s leaders, while others fear economic uncertainty.
