California Governor Invests in PR Firm to Enhance State’s Image
Governor Gavin Newsom is keen on revamping California’s somewhat negative perception across the nation. To tackle this, he’s allocated millions of taxpayer funds to a prominent public relations firm based in New York.
The Office of Business and Economic Development awarded a contract valued at up to $19 million to Edelman, a well-known PR firm, to help elevate the Golden State’s reputation, as reported by KCRA.
Edelman, which also works with major brands like Dove and Starbucks, is expected to counteract “negative narratives” that have gained traction both online and in partisan media, while also promoting California’s economy and tourism.
The contract is slated to commence on April 6 and will last until the year’s end.
The GO-Biz department previously issued a call for proposals, indicating that preference would be given to small businesses for contract opportunities.
A spokesperson from GO-Biz mentioned that Edelman’s proposal includes partnerships with several small businesses.
State officials have emphasized that this campaign is about California rather than Governor Newsom himself. They stated, “This effort is about California’s success, not politics.”
However, the announcement has sparked considerable criticism. Some, like Kevin Dalton, who ran for a county supervisor position, voiced their concerns, remarking that it appears as though Newsom is using taxpayer money to promote himself under the guise of improving California’s image. “This doesn’t sound like anything other than presidential campaign ads,” he wrote.
Similarly, Republican candidate Christine Bisch remarked, “Californians are not being consulted; they’re being charged.” She expressed concern over the use of more taxpayer funds for a PR campaign while many families are struggling with basic necessities.
