Gavin Newsom's wife reprimands journalists at Planned Parenthood bill signing event

California First Lady Critiques Media Focus

The wife of California Governor Gavin Newsom addressed reporters recently, expressing frustration over their choice of questions during a press conference. This occurred after Newsom spoke about funding for family planning initiatives following the federal funding cut from the Big Beautiful Act, signed by President Trump.

As reporters shifted focus to other topics—like the high-speed rail project and an upcoming meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz—California’s First Lady, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, stepped in. She tapped her husband on the shoulder and voiced her discontent.

“I can’t believe we have Planned Parenthood here, and women make up 51 percent of the population,” she remarked. “And yet, the majority of questions revolve around different issues.” Her comments hinted at a disconnect, as she pressed the media to stay on topic.

“You have an incredible caucus of women and allies, and you’re not asking about it,” she continued. “This happens repeatedly. There’s this ongoing ‘war against women’ in our country, and it seems you don’t care.” Her tone was serious but carried a hint of disbelief, ending with, “So I just say that with love.” It was a pointed reminder for journalists to focus on the reasons for the gathering.

Despite her passionate call to action, the reporters seemed unaffected; most of the subsequent questions for Governor Newsom did not relate to the funding for Planned Parenthood. It left one wondering how often such important topics may be overlooked in favor of other matters.
