Gavin Ortlund Offers 5 Ways for Christians to Remain Steadfast in Difficult Times

Reflection on a Dark World

Christian theologian and author Gavin Ortlund shares his thoughts with followers, emphasizing that Jesus is the sole true light in a troubling world. In a recent video, he expressed disappointment over the assassination of Charlie Kirk, though he found solace in biblical promises. The day after Kirk’s murder, Ortlund reflected on how it feels like the world has crossed a critical point, yet asserted that Jesus is the remedy for humanity’s ailments.

Ortlund, a theologian at Immanuel Nashville and a visiting history theology professor at Phoenix Theological Seminary, provided five steps for Christians seeking to maintain their faith during these challenging times.

The first step, according to him, is to concentrate on Christ. He referenced the words of Jesus from John 14: “Let not your hearts be troubled.” Ortlund mentioned that in confronting evil, it’s crucial to anchor ourselves in God’s Word, allowing us to respond to darkness as followers of Jesus. He noted that when Jesus spoke these words, His disciples were apprehensive about the future.

“As believers in Jesus, we face the evil in the world. Whatever happens, our faith remains steadfast,” Ortlund stated. “The first move is to turn to God—go to your prayer space and return to the basics.”

The second step is about taking proactive measures. Ortlund urged Christians to engage in doing good, asserting that it’s time to speak up boldly and kindly about hope and truth.

“Now is not the time for silence. We should be vocal about hope in Jesus and truth,” he insisted.

He also encouraged believers to avoid engaging with hateful individuals online. Instead, he recommended reaching out to those who are silently observing and experiencing trouble, discussing the hopes found in the gospel with them.

“Don’t get caught up in the negativity. Instead, connect with those who need hope,” Ortlund advised.

“The internet can be incredibly divisive. It heightens our anxiety levels and doesn’t help to resolve issues,” he explained. “Go outside, throw a frisbee, and enjoy time with friends. Constant online engagement only adds to our stress.”

The fourth piece of advice is to tackle life one day at a time. Ortlund emphasized enjoying the simple pleasures without overwhelming oneself with the world’s broader issues.

“This is a timeless lesson—each day has enough challenges of its own. Don’t worry about what tomorrow holds; it can be too much to bear,” he said.

The final step is to reflect on Christ’s own sufferings. Ortlund reminded followers of how Jesus faced persecution and pain.

“Through His suffering, God ultimately brings good. In times of severe distress, it’s crucial to hold onto the hope of revival,” he stated. “When darkness prevails, remembering that hope can uplift us.”

Ortlund wrapped up his message by underscoring the importance of gospel hope in confronting life’s darkest moments.

“Can we truly confront the evils of the world without the hope of the gospel? Personally, I couldn’t do it. That hope is vital, and I trust it can carry you as well,” he concluded.
