GBP/USD Outlook: A Cautious Start to the Week

The GBP/USD pair kicked off the new week in a relatively steady manner, following some varied movements on Friday. It stabilized just above the 1.3400 mark during Asian trading sessions. However, the mixed fundamental landscape suggests that traders should proceed with caution before anyone anticipates a continuation of last week’s robust turnaround from the recent low of 1.3250-1.3245, which had been the lowest point since early August.

Meanwhile, the US dollar is having a tough time building on Friday’s gains, especially with expectations surfacing regarding further interest rate cuts from the US Federal Reserve this year. Additionally, worries about a prolonged government shutdown, escalating global trade tensions, and signs of economic slowing in the US have put dollar proponents on their heels. These factors are pivotal in providing some buoyancy to the GBP/USD pair.

On the UK side of things, underwhelming employment data released last week intensified speculation that the Bank of England might adopt a gradual approach to cutting interest rates. Moreover, concerns over the UK’s fiscal outlook as we approach the crucial Autumn Budget in November further complicate matters for the British pound. As such, it would be wise to remain cautious about bullish traders and their positions, which are presumably aiming for more gains.

From a technical standpoint, the inability to breach the 50% Fibonacci retracement level during Friday’s trading invites a bit of patience. It might be best to wait for substantial follow-through buying to validate a short-term bottom in spot prices. Looking ahead, the absence of impactful economic indicators from either the UK or the US scheduled for Monday means that the GBP/USD pair might remain influenced mainly by fluctuations in the USD.
