Gemini, Google’s AI chatbot, faces criticism for describing Memorial Day as ‘controversial’

Google AI Chatbot Criticized for “Anti-American” Remarks

Google’s artificial intelligence chatbot, known as Gemini, faces criticism for what some are calling “anti-American” statements linked to white supremacist origins, particularly around the anniversary of Memorial Day.

The Media Research Center (MRC), a conservative media watchdog, has raised concerns about potential bias in Gemini. They pointed out that the chatbot has stirred controversy over issues related to “inclusiveness and representation,” especially recalling the Jim Crow era.

On May 16, the MRC asked Gemini, “Is Memorial Day controversial?” The chatbot reportedly replied, “Yes, Memorial Day is a holiday with some controversy that stems from several factors.”

Mixed Opinions on Memorial Day

One of the points raised by the MRC was regarding “White Memorial Day.” They noted that, historically, during the Jim Crow era, many communities observed anniversaries focused predominantly on white contributions, often neglecting the sacrifices made by Black service members.

Additionally, the MRC suggested that Gemini’s views on the anniversary are “intimately linked with national identity and patriotism,” and may appear complex or contentious for those holding differing views on American history and foreign policies.

The organization further critiqued Gemini for suggesting that the “glory of war” is often emphasized during these commemorations, claiming that this perspective does not just reflect the costs of conflict but may also glorify war itself.

What Gemini Says

When Fox News Digital posed the same question to Gemini, it replied, asserting that the main purpose of Memorial Day is to honor U.S. service members who died in military service. However, it also acknowledged that “the history of the holiday includes elements that can be seen through the lens of race.”

Gemini highlighted that some aspects of the controversy stem from memorializing those who fought to uphold slavery, which many view as racially insensitive and a painful reminder of America’s divided past.

While acknowledging that honoring fallen service members isn’t inherently racist, Gemini remarked that the historical context, selective narratives, and ongoing Confederate observances intertwine the holiday’s history with racial issues.

As of now, Google has not provided a response regarding the concerns raised by Fox News Digital.
