Retired General Jack Keene has criticized Congressional Democrats after they released a video encouraging U.S. service members to “reject illegal orders” from the Trump administration. He labeled the message as “irresponsible” and “reckless,” viewing it as a significant challenge to the military’s chain of command.
In an interview on “America’s Newsroom,” Keene expressed his outrage, stating, “I think this is pretty outrageous. I don’t see any standards for that. These leaders are politically irresponsible.” He believes they have effectively undermined the military chain of command.
The video, released by a group of Democrats with military and intelligence backgrounds, including Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) and others like Rep. Chris Deluzio and Rep. Jason Crow, advocated for service members to refuse unlawful orders during their previous service activations.
Conservatives have condemned the video, suggesting it incites rebellion against President Trump and his administration’s military directives.
Keene accused the lawmakers of disrespecting the intelligence and moral resolve of soldiers, pointing out their failure to specify what constitutes an illegal order. “What are they really aiming for with this? What do they hope to achieve?” he asked. He noted that throughout American history, war declarations have been rare and that presidents have acted accordingly since World War II. He stressed politicians should allow military leadership to address security matters and not create discord.
While acknowledging the right to critique Trump’s policies, Keene described the encouragement of disobedience as “shameful.” This initiative coincides with Slotkin’s proposed legislation aimed at restricting Trump’s power to deploy the National Guard domestically or engage militarily without Congressional consent.
Slotkin mentioned in a weekend appearance on ABC News that she wasn’t aware of any illegal orders from Trump but referred to “legal gymnastics” regarding military actions in the Caribbean.
Former military lawyer has raised alarms about possible court-martial implications for service members who heed the Democrats’ recommendations. In a statement, Rep. Chrissy Houlahan defended their message, asserting that reminding the military of their constitutional obligations is patriotic and essential.
She emphasized that historical naval mottos symbolize loyalty and duty rather than rebellion. Meanwhile, Rep. Crow expressed concern that the President’s actions put service members in a tough position, reiterating that military personnel have a duty not to follow unlawful orders.
Responding to Trump’s threats on Truth Social concerning prison terms for lawmakers, Slotkin’s office recounted a prior incident involving former Defense Secretary Mark Esper, further showcasing the contentious atmosphere.
Democrats issued a joint statement dismissing any threats of intimidation or violence against their responsibilities. Slotkin, Kelly, Deluzio, and Goodlander did not respond immediately to requests for comments.
