Gen Z men’s rightward shift is happening, but could be temporary

The success of the Trump campaign in invading young men in the 2024 presidential election has overthrew much of the traditional wisdom about American youth voting.

The verified voter file will provide more accurate photos of how young people voted later this spring, but Post-election survey I found out from my organization that 58% of Gen Z men (i.e. voters ages 18 to 27) reported their vote for Donald Trump. Not since George HW Bush's election Thirty-six years ago, the majority of young voters supported Republicans for the president.

However, a closer look at the data suggests that young male voters could have been in the hands of more people than expected. Young men gradually abandoned the Democratic label For the majority of the past decade, according to Gallup data. However, it was only last year or so that GOP brands became more popular with Gen Z Men.

Ours investigation Americans in Z American Generals, conducted in late 2023, found that ZZ men were more likely to identify with Democrats than Republicans (30% vs. 24%, respectively). Our findings 2024 after the electionHowever, it shows a marked reversal of this pattern, indicating that Gen Z Men is more likely to identify as Republicans (38%) than Democrats (23%).

The same study also shows an increase in the conservative identity of Gen Z Men. This has increased from 31% in the second half of 2023 to 45% in the second half of 2024. Only about one of the five generations of Z men who now describe themselves as liberal.

It is not yet certain whether it will become a longer-lasting reorganization of political values that drives this change among young men. Some argue that discussions about cultural factors, particularly the role of masculinity and gender, are the main source of Gen Z Men's more conservative political outlook.

Many GOP Leader others Conservative influencers It argues that the biggest crisis facing America is the left-wing “war of masculinity.” Feminism argues that it is the real reason that men are more isolated, less likely to be employed, and have higher mental health issues than their father's generation.

Republican voters generally have long been likely to support the traditional roles of women and men over other voters, commitment Strong gender norms It saturated the 2024 Trump campaign in the midst of a bigger conservative backlash against trans rights and the #MeToo movement. The fact that Trump faced female enemies in November – a successful professional woman who chose not to have her own biological children – It definitely flares up in those flames too.

Trump's campaign thought the hypermasculine appeal was certainly thinking. Playing well with many young menAs evidenced by its successful strategy of having Trump and Vance Appears on a podcast that is primarily a male audience from Gen Z..

It is likely that the success of that strategy shows that Gen Z men have become more reactionary in their views on gender, or that Republicans (and conservatives) are still being discussed. Whether it has become. Some evidence from equimundo and aei Gen Z Men has shown that they have not supported feminism in recent years, making it more difficult for men today than women than they have in the past, and it is likely that men are more likely to face discrimination in society will be higher.

However, other studies complicate the story. For example, only 22% of Gen Z men found that women agreed that the benefits they made in recent years have come at the expense of men.

American Boys and Men Research InstituteAnalysis of trend data shows that young men are increasingly embracing gender equality over time, and the majority agree that working mothers can form relationships with children as warm and safe as home mothers. I'm doing it. Young men increasingly reject the idea that men are more suited to politics than women.

The Republican's reinforced embrace of traditional gender roles may have rocked some young men to vote for Trump (or to identify more as Republicans). However, the Trump campaign's targeting efforts to engage young male voters, especially in the Manosphere online space, may have sent them even more important signals that their vote is important. This strategic outreach is in stark contrast to the Harris campaign, where appeals to young voters were primarily targeted at Gen Z Women, highlighting abortion rights as an important theme.

However, compared to 2020, the drivers that Trump's major drivers have improved in this election are frankly: Most groups of voters – I was concerned about inflation High level of dissatisfaction With the Biden administration. A post-election survey found that 64% of male Gen Z voters agreed that increased housing costs and daily costs were the most important issues for the vote.

Whether right-facing political drift will become more permanent among Gen Z men is still seen if the economy performs better under the second Trump administration.

However, it is important to note that today's young men are actually more liberal in their political outlook Scope of policy issues It is defended by Democrats compared to young Obama-era men, due to issues such as abortion rights, same-sex marriage, environmental protection, gun control. They have also supported trade unions more and supported the Palestinian state, but certainly not. Gen Z women have grown up and become liberal.

In a political environment where young Americans are distrustful of government and other institutions in society, both parties certainly cut through their work to appeal to Gen Z voters in future elections.
