Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) faced a significant challenge from Gen Z candidate Liam Elkind, who announced that his campaign raised over $340,000 on its first day of fundraising.
“In just one day, Liam not only surpassed the total raised by Nadler during the entire previous quarter but also shifted the entire landscape,” Elkind’s campaign adviser David Epstein stated.
“This isn’t merely momentum; it’s a movement. It’s clear that New Yorkers are craving fresh, bold leadership. The grassroots backing Liam is receiving indicates that his progressive vision resonates deeply. And this is just the start,” he added.
The Hill was the first to report on Elkind’s fundraising success.
Nadler, for his part, revealed that he secured over $91,000 in fundraising for the second quarter and has around $243,000 still available.
At 26, Elkind launched his challenge to the 78-year-old Nadler on Wednesday, making age a central theme of his campaign.
In his introductory video, Elkind expressed gratitude for Nadler’s years of service, mentioning that he had voted for him in the past.
“However, we can’t afford to wait—we need a new leader who can rise to this moment,” Elkind emphasized. “We must act to combat Trump, eliminate corruption, prohibit corporate PAC donations, enforce term limits, build homes, and assist our neighbors in need.”
Nadler, who began his congressional career in 1992, has a history of successfully defeating significant challengers and was reelected in 2022 before taking on another incumbent.
The discussion about the age of elected Democrats has intensified recently. Former President Biden faced scrutiny regarding his reelection campaign amid concerns about his fitness, while Rep. Jerry Connolly (D-Va.) also came under similar examination.
Moreover, former Democratic National Committee vice-chairman David Hogg stirred interest when he established a group aimed at youthful leadership, with a $20 million initiative to support Democrats in safe districts.
