Geno Auriemma declines handshake after heated argument with Dawn Staley

During Friday’s March Madness matchup, tensions flared between two prominent coaches, Geno Auriemma of UW and Dawn Staley of South Carolina, leading to a heated exchange on the sidelines.

As the game neared its conclusion, with South Carolina ahead 62-48, Auriemma approached Staley, initiating a confrontational dialogue that quickly escalated into a shouting match. Following the game, Auriemma chose not to shake Staley’s hand.

Staley discussed the incident in a post-game interview with ESPN. She said, “I don’t know what happened, but I’m honest. If I did something to anger Geno, I’m clueless. Maybe he thought I didn’t shake his hand before the game, but I did. I greeted everyone on his staff. Afterward, things can get heated in the moment. We’ll move past it.”

Interestingly, footage showed Auriemma shaking hands with Staley prior to the game.

In his post-game remarks, Auriemma didn’t delve into the altercation but expressed his frustration during the game broadcast, stating, “In that quarter, we had all six fouls called against us. They kept hitting our players. I’m not making excuses; we missed shots, but it was ridiculous.” He also criticized Staley’s sideline behavior, suggesting that she was not held accountable for her actions.

After the game, when asked about his interaction with Staley, Auriemma remarked, “I shared what I had to say, but…nothing…nothing,” avoiding further details. He added, “I said what I said, and she clearly didn’t appreciate it. I just told the truth.”

Auriemma also spoke about the pregame handshake protocol, noting, “I waited three minutes to meet at half-court to shake hands, but no one seems to notice.” The footage of their confrontation quickly circulated online, leaving fans astonished that such respected figures in women’s basketball could clash so publicly.

ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith criticized Auriemma’s behavior on social media, stating, “I never thought I’d see the day when the greatest women’s college coach would act so unprofessionally. It was a bad look, and I believe it should be condemned.”
