Geno Smith Reflects on Offseason Struggles

Jets quarterback Geno Smith has faced some issues with police this offseason, expressing concern about possibly disrupting his team’s progress.

At Tuesday’s press conference, Smith addressed the situation candidly. “Honestly, I want to say that we’re really eager to finish OTAs. It felt like we were building some positive momentum, and I’m really satisfied with how the team is coming together,” he shared. “It’s tough knowing I was involved in something that could have held us back—my teammates and this organization have worked so hard to get us here. I’m relieved to put this behind us and move forward, growing each day with my fellow players.”

Smith emphasized his gratitude for being part of the Jets again, looking ahead to improving during training camp starting the next day. He joined the Jets after being traded from the Raiders back in March.

However, this offseason hasn’t been smooth sailing for Smith. He encountered three separate incidents with law enforcement in Florida. In April, he was pulled over for having an improper tag. Additionally, police visited his home in June after a woman accused him of hitting her. Though she shared video footage on social media, no charges were filed. The final incident occurred on July 6, when he was stopped for speeding—110 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Smith has already discussed these matters with team leadership. “I’ve talked with the coach and some veterans, like Aaron and Darren, as well as other players. But we’re determined to move forward from this,” he said.

When asked if he felt any need to change his behavior to avoid negative press in the future, Smith remained focused. “I’m just excited for practice tomorrow and look forward to kicking off the season,” he said.

In team news, the Jets placed edge rusher Joseph Ossai on the physically unable to perform list for undisclosed reasons while removing wide receiver Tim Patrick from the PUP list, allowing him to participate in Wednesday’s practice.
