Former Georgia Lieutenant Colonel Switches to Democratic Party Amidst Trump’s Criticism

Former Georgia Lieutenant Colonel Jeff Duncan has faced backlash from President Donald Trump for his recent political shift from Republican to Democrat. On Friday, Trump called Duncan a “complete loser” on his social media platform, accusing him of being ineffective and abandoning the Republican Party.

In response to Trump’s remarks, Duncan expressed a mix of emotions during an interview. He mentioned wishing Trump success but also highlighted his pride in leaving the Republican Party. “I’m proud to be a non-Republican,” he stated.

Duncan, who cited several policy issues such as healthcare and immigration as reasons for his party change, indicated that his experiences in office helped him understand a broader perspective on community care. “I think it’s easier to love your neighbor as a Democrat,” he reflected, acknowledging that this stance might not be universally accepted.

Previously, Duncan held a significant role in the Georgia Legislature after being elected as lieutenant governor in 2018. He chose not to seek re-election in 2022. After resigning, he became known for being critical of Trump’s attempts to challenge the election results in Georgia.

As he contemplates a potential run for governor in 2026, Duncan shared that he’s been receiving encouragement from various groups, including Democrats and independents. “My family and I are certainly not ready to make that big decision… but it’s something we’re considering,” he mentioned, also recognizing the urgency of deciding soon given the approaching election cycle.

Duncan stressed the need for a moderate approach within the Democratic Party, emphasizing that successful candidates must appeal to a wider audience rather than fringe elements. He pointed out that more than a few Democrats are already in the running for the governor’s race, including prominent figures like former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.

Looking ahead, Duncan believes Georgia will remain a key player in national politics and hopes the upcoming elections will provide a platform for civil discourse. He highlighted concerns about Trump-aligned candidates, arguing that voters in Georgia desire leadership that prioritizes education, safety, and responsive government.
