George Clooney Responds To Trump’s Call For Clooney To Abandon Politics: ‘I Will If He Does’

Actor George Clooney has firmly defended himself against former President Donald Trump's claims that he should give up politics and refocus on his entertainment career.

“If he does that, I do that,” Clooney said of Trump during an interview on Tuesday's “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

Clooney, the Democratic Party's top fundraiser, also thrust himself onto the political stage when he agreed to become one of Joe Biden's celebrity campaigners alongside actress Julia Roberts. But the actor later The New York Times There, he called on Biden to drop out of the presidential race following his dismal performance in the debate.

“Was he tired? Yes. Did he have a cold? Maybe. But it's time for our party leaders to stop pretending 51 million people didn't see what we saw. We were all so frightened by the prospect of a second Trump term that we chose to ignore all the warning signs,” Clooney wrote.

“I love Joe Biden. As a senator, as vice president and as president. I consider him a friend and I trust him. I trust his character. I trust his morals,” he added. “Over the last four years, he has won many of the battles he's faced.”

“But the one battle he can't win is the battle against time. None of us can win that,” Clooney continued.

Following Clooney's opinion piece, Trump commented on the actor's change of heart, saying, “He turned his back on Crooked Joe like they were both rats. What the hell does Clooney know?”

When Clooney appeared on Jimmy Kimmel on Tuesday, Kimmel began by talking about Clooney's op-ed, “[changed] world.”

“It had a huge impact on the presidential election,” the host claimed.

Kimmel continued, reading out some of Trump's social media posts:[Reading in Trump’s voice] Clooney should retire from politics and return to television,” to which Clooney responded, “If you do that, so will I,” drawing thunderous applause from the audience.

“That's the trade-off I make,” Clooney continued.

The Trump segment ended with Kimmel jokingly asking Clooney if he would write another op-ed calling for Trump to step down, saying, “It worked once, why not try it again?” Clooney responded, “He's my biggest fan.”

Clooney then praised Biden for stepping down, saying, “At the end of the day, it's a very difficult thing to give up power, and President Biden has done a really great job. I really, honestly, [that’s] What should we focus on?”

Clooney also joked that meddling in US political affairs “could have gone very badly.” “But it could still go badly,” he added.
