Conservative lawyer George Conway said it was “strange” but “honoured” to be named in author E. Jean Carroll's defamation lawsuit against former President Trump.
Conway said in an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper. explained He said he met Carroll in 2019, “a week or two” after New York Magazine published excerpts detailing her experiences with Trump, including a rape allegation in the 1990s.
Conway, the soon-to-be ex-husband of former Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway, wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post in response to the allegations, urging readers to believe her.
“A few days after I wrote that piece, I happened to meet Jean Carroll at a cocktail party in Manhattan, and she came up to me, introduced herself, and thanked me for writing it. ” he said.
Conway said she asked if it was enough to sue the former president, and after Trump denied the charges, Conway convinced her to sue for defamation. He also helped her find an attorney, Robert Kaplan, according to an interview.
Trump was convicted in May 2023 of sexual assault and defamation charges surrounding Carroll, with a jury finding that he sexually abused the author and later defamed her. However, nine jurors did not find him guilty of rape.
He was also ordered to pay Carroll $5 million in restitution at the time.
The former president has denied wrongdoing, and Carroll returned to court this week seeking $10 million in compensatory damages and millions more in punitive damages.
In court this week, the former president's lawyer Alina Habba questioned Conway's relationship with Carroll. In response, she said it was public knowledge that he had advised her on this matter, so she said there was “no secret there.”
“This is also completely unrelated, but for some reason Mr. Trump and his lawyers seem so obsessed with that fact that they consistently repeat it over and over again in their first trial, to the point where they had no choice but to tell the judge to stop. ,” Conway said. “And they'll be doing it again this week.”
“I'm kind of honored about it, but it's all a little weird,” he continued.
Conway, who has been a vocal critic of Trump, said the defamation case was a “microcosm” of Trump's “propensity to repeatedly lie and attack.” Ta.
Trump claimed he had no idea who Carroll was at the time he made the accusations. He also claimed that he had never met her and that she was not his type.
The former president also confused a photo of Carole with his ex-wife Marla Maples.
Mr. Trump went out of his way to appear in court, something he had not done before. But during the proceedings, he was charged with disorderly conduct, and a federal judge threatened to remove him.
