George Kalinsky’s photography genius just the start of how awesome he was

We met regularly for lunch, and each time I would watch “The Chris Farley Show,” the old “Saturday Night Live” show where Farley would gush about, say, Paul McCartney. I tried my best not to feel like I was acting as a standby host. , ask him tough questions such as: “Remember when you were in the Beatles? It was awesome!”

And each time, George Kalinsky would smile and say something to this effect. “I was just a guy with a camera.”

Anyone with even a passing interest in New York City sports over the past 55 years or so knows about Kalinsky. You knew him as someone who was everywhere with his camera at important moments, mostly at Madison Square Garden, but not limited there. You probably knew him by his distinctive credit line: “From the Lens of George Kalinsky.”

George Kalinsky was a legendary photographer at Madison Square Garden.

Most likely, you knew him thanks to his extraordinary gallery of works. He was an artist with a camera and often a magician. He smiled and shook his head.
