Concerns Loom Over Dragon House as George R.R. Martin Speaks Out
A recent blog post hinted at some brewing tensions within the production of Dragon House, leading George R.R. Martin to clarify his relationship with showrunner Ryan Condal. Unfortunately, the outlook doesn’t seem too promising.
In an interview with Hollywood Reporter, Martin expressed his inability to share much regarding the future with Condal while working on Season 3. However, he did disclose, “It’s worse than Rocky. It’s awful.”
Martin, typically known for his hands-on involvement with HBO adaptations, noted that his collaboration with Condal had a solid start. Yet, things changed during the production of Dragon House Season 2 when Condal allegedly ceased to heed Martin’s guidance.
“We hired Ryan,” Martin explained. “Ryan and I thought we were partners, and we had finished the first season all together. I read an early draft of the script and provided notes, and he made some changes. It worked well; at least, I thought it did.”
He elaborated, “Then we went into Season 2, and he basically stopped listening to me.”
“I give them notes, and nothing changes,” he complained. “Sometimes he’d explain why he wasn’t following them. Other times, he’d respond with a casual, ‘Oh, okay, yeah, I’ll think about it.'” As time passed, frustrations escalated, leading HBO to request all of Martin’s notes be compiled and sent to Condal.
Following a blog post where Martin aired his criticisms regarding Season 2, tensions peaked during a Zoom call where Condal outlined his vision for Season 3. Martin voiced his worries, saying, “This is not my story anymore.” Though he was asked to step away from the series, he returned a few months later.
Condal’s representatives were contacted for comments but did not respond before publication. Yet, Condal did publicly state, “I made every effort to involve George in the adaptation process… But at a certain point, he became reluctant to acknowledge the practical issues… For the sake of the crew and HBO, I just keep moving forward. I hope George and I can find that harmony again one day.”
According to an HBO official, Condal and Martin experienced “some disagreements about the direction of Season 3,” prompting a recommendation to “take a step back for a while until we find a new direction.”
Martin’s future involvement in Dragon House Season 3 remains uncertain after his brief hiatus, but the show has already received a renewal for Season 4 before Season 3 even premieres.
Dragon House Season 3 is anticipated to debut in summer 2026, with Season 4 expected in summer 2028.
