A couple from Georgia were arrested on a Florida beach after police say they were drunk and allowed their children to wander.
The Volusia Sheriff’s Office released body camera footage showing police trying to wake up two 27-year-olds as they lay in Daytona Beach on Saturday. Empty alcohol containers and children’s toys were placed around them.
The arrest affidavit states that an anonymous tipster reported the couple to police. according to In the Miami Herald.
Police said they nudged the two, but were unable to wake them up, so they became worried and checked for a pulse. They finally started screaming loudly before waking up in a “chaos” state.
Deputies asked where the children were but could not answer.
“Don’t you know where they are?” asked the police officer.
The two were identified as Alicia Langley, a tourist from Atlanta, Georgia, and her fiancé, Timothy Stevens.
At one point in the video, Langley lashed out at her fiance, who was about to be arrested.
“Who is going to unite us?” she cried.
Video also captured the moment Stevens tried to run away from the officer, tripped and landed on his face, knocking him unconscious. Police had to call an ambulance to treat his injuries.
The children were found swimming unsupervised in the pool at the Nautilus Inn. They were picked up by relatives and brought back to Georgia.
Langley and Stevens were both charged with third-degree felony child abandonment. Stevens was also charged with attempting to escape while intoxicated on a Volusia County beach. Police said Stevens is not the biological father of the two children.
“To leave a 5-year-old and a 7-year-old to be wiped out by driving here is just mind-boggling,” said Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood. Go to WOFL-TV. “I went to read the report and thought, ‘This must be a joke.'”
Chitwood thought the arrest taught him a bigger lesson about society.
“When we wonder what we’re seeing and why children are the way they are, we have to step back and look at who’s in charge. And clearly, this Two clowns shouldn’t be in charge…they can’t be in charge of themselves, let alone a five-year-old or a seven-year-old,” Chitwood concluded. Ta.
