Things took a turn for the worst after a high school basketball game in Georgia earlier this month.
Police are investigating an on-court altercation during a game between Sonoraville High School and Rockmart on Jan. 3 in Calhoun. According to TMZ.
A Rockmart player shoved a Sonoraville player, punched him in the face, and then landed a second punch on another player on the opposing team, video posted on social media showed.
According to a Gordon County Sheriff's Office incident report, the 16-year-old Rockmart player was allegedly provoked when the Sonoraville player “continued to call him the N-word and became angry.”
The Rockmart player faces two counts of simple battery, according to a police report.
The violent scene occurred with less than four minutes left in the third quarter.
The Rockmart player pushed the Sonoraville player to the ground, and the player was knocked down by another punch before getting back up.
Another Sonoraville player ran toward the scuffle and was hit by a Rockmart player with a haymaker.
Screams could be heard from the crowd, with some running from the stands and benches to intervene.
The Rockmart player was stopped by multiple people before the video cut out.
As of Thursday morning, neither school had yet publicly addressed the incident.
