Georgia man accused of killing wife with hammer at retirement community: report

An 81-year-old man is accused of killing his wife by hitting her in the head multiple times with a hammer at the couple’s retirement community, according to a criminal arrest warrant obtained by Fox 5 Atlanta.

Richard Hayden, 81, of Lawrenceville, was arrested Wednesday and charged with felony murder, murder and aggravated assault in the death of his wife, Grace Hayden, according to Gwinnett County Police. The 71-year-old woman was found dead in her room at Lindwood Estates Gracious Retirement Living, police said.

According to the arrest warrant, Hayden attacked his wife with a hammer and hit her in the head, causing severe injuries that caused her death.

Police said Richard Hayden was being treated at a nearby hospital for reasons unrelated to the incident before being charged.

The cause of death will be determined by the Gwinnett County Coroner’s Office.

The circumstances and motive that led to his death are also under investigation.

Once Hayden is released from the hospital, he will be transported to the Gwinnett County Jail.
