Georgia Man Arrested for Threatening Senators
A man from Georgia has been charged with making threats of sexual violence against two Republican senators and their families. Robert Davis Forney, 25, from Duluth, was taken into custody on Monday, facing federal charges related to threats communicated across state lines.
The charges were filed on June 10 by a federal judge in the Northern District of Georgia. According to authorities, Forney left a voicemail for Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, on January 9, threatening sexual violence against him and his family.
The following day, he reportedly called Senator Deb Fischer’s office in Nebraska and also left a similar threatening message. However, specific details of these threats haven’t been made public.
A spokesperson for Senator Fischer acknowledged that threats against public figures, including lawmakers, are not an uncommon issue. They emphasized that the senator’s office has reported such threats to U.S. Capitol Police, who take appropriate measures to handle them. Fischer appreciates the concern shown by Nebraskans and continues her work on their behalf.
The U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg remarked that targeting elected officials and their families reflects actions that undermine democracy. Hertzberg stated, “Political discourse and disagreement never justifies relying on despicable attacks on our country’s leaders.”
The investigation into this situation is being carried out by both the FBI and U.S. Capitol Police as part of a broader initiative focused on combating violent crimes in the community.
As of now, Cruz’s office has not responded to inquiries regarding the incident.
