Georgia, Mississippi State baseball players get into heated skirmish after play at plate, sparking ejections

Georgia Bulldogs baseball won against Mississippi State on Saturday night, but it wasn’t without some heated moments late in the game.

In the top of the 8th inning, with the game tied at 2-2, the Mississippi State Bulldogs struck out Dillon Carter at bat. Mississippi State catcher Johnny Long stood over Carter as he lay on the dirt ground, continuing to poke at him. The home plate umpire pulled Long away.

Colby Branch, who was in the on-deck circle, started yelling at Long as he was walking back to the dugout. Players from both teams then started a scrum.

Umpires and SEC officials decided to eject 11 players from the game for leaving the dugout or bullpen and entering the field during a potential incident.

“I don’t know where to start tonight, because it’s the craziest game I’ve ever been a part of,” Georgia baseball coach Wes Johnson said after the game, according to the school’s website. “I talk a lot about believing in yourself and enjoying the difficult things, and how difficult things make you grow, not just in the game of baseball, but in life.”

“Clayton Chadwick is one of our best outfielders. He just happened to misplay the ball tonight, which was a coincidence. He was resilient. I told him, ‘You’re going to play this ball.’ He’s going to play to win the ball game against us.”’ “I didn’t expect it to be a home run, but it was a home run. We were very persistent. It was a win for the whole team.”

Mississippi State coach Chris Lemonis was upset about the ejection decision.

“That’s bad,” he said, according to Dawg Nation. “My team is on the field, doing what it’s supposed to do.”
