Georgia Republican backs Biden, blasts those in party who ‘fall in line’ with Trump

Former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Jeff Duncan (R) announced Monday that he will support President Biden in the November election and criticized other Republicans who are “aligned” with former President Trump.

In an editorial published in atlanta journal constitution “It’s disappointing to see more Republicans following in President Trump’s footsteps,” Duncan said Monday.

He said he had no choice but to support Biden over the presumptive Republican nominee, describing him as “a man who has been disqualified by his actions and character.”

“But the Republican Party will not be rebuilt until we emerge from the Trump era, and conservative (but not angry) Republicans like me have no choice but to pull the lever on Biden. At the same time, we We should seek to elect a Congressional majority to block his second-term legislative agenda and provide checks and balances,” Duncan wrote.

Mr. Duncan cited the hush money lawsuit in New York as one of the reasons he did not support Mr. Trump. He also accused President Trump of promoting “baseless conspiracy theories that led to the horrific events of January 6, 2021.”

Mr. Duncan was once seen as a potential third-party presidential candidate, but after the 2020 election he accused Mr. Trump and his allies of engaging in fake election schemes across the country. .

He claimed that some “reluctant Trump supporters” were supporting Trump because of his policy differences with Biden, and that there was a “sense of turmoil that is currently sweeping the nation” on college campuses. He said that some people might point out that. Mr. Duncan denied those claims, saying the final year of Trump’s presidency was “not a peaceful time.”

“Trump has shown us what kind of person he is. We should believe in him. It’s impossible for him to change at 77 years old,” Duncan wrote.

He ended his article by saying that although he has been a lifelong Republican, he will continue to vote for Biden.

“Unlike Trump, I’ve been a Republican all my life. This November, I’m going to vote for a sane person who I disagree with when it comes to policy toward criminal defendants who have no moral compass,” he said. Ta.

Duncan emerged as a candidate for No Labels, a political group pursuing the idea of proposing a bipartisan unity ticket. He said in March that he had withdrawn his name from consideration for the no-label ticket.

No Labels announced last month that it would not pursue a unified ticket after failing to find a candidate.

The Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.
