Heroic Teacher Dies While Rescuing Girl from Rip Current

A well-loved elementary school teacher from Georgia tragically lost his life after attempting to save a young girl caught in a rip current at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, as reported by authorities and family members.

Derrick Moore, 47, entered the water near 10th Avenue South on Friday evening, around 7:53 p.m., when the girl became trapped, according to the Myrtle Beach Police Department.

Authorities noted that Moore managed to bring the girl to safety, but the current then swept her back into the sea. This occurred shortly after the lifeguard’s shift had ended.

Rescue teams, including police and firefighters, searched for Moore until Saturday morning. They eventually recovered his body, which had washed ashore.

Moore’s daughter shared that her father was unaware of the girl he risked his life to save, expressing her deep love and sadness over his loss, stating, “He was a wonderful father and we will all miss him.” A GoFundMe page indicates that he leaves behind four children.

As news of his heroism spread, many friends, family members, and former teammates expressed their condolences, remembering him as a devoted father, skilled athlete, and a selfless individual. These traits, they noted, were clearly evident in his last act of bravery.

Moore was a current teacher at Rockbridge Elementary School in Georgia, where students affectionately called him “Coach.” He had previously taught at Jolly Elementary School. The DeKalb County School District expressed deep sorrow over his death, acknowledging the significant impact he had on students and the community.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp also offered tributes, stating that he and his wife were heartbroken at Moore’s passing, urging others to keep his family in their prayers during this difficult time.

Friends remembered Moore as an outstanding athlete, having played both football and track during his time at Samford University, where he graduated in 2001. The university expressed grief over the loss of their alumnus, describing him as a “true hero.”

Many highlighted his willingness to help others, explaining that his ultimate sacrifice illustrates the kind of person he truly was. A family member remarked on how fitting it was that he chose to risk his life for a child he did not know, declaring, “You died as a hero. You died saving the life of a stranger. What a legacy.”
